Barbados is known as a paradise island, not surprising given its natural advantages of clear blue seas and silver sanded beaches. With eight or nine hours of sunshine a day, temperatures between 75 and 90 degrees F and a gentle steady breeze from the Atlantic, the island offers the perfect year round holiday.
Although only 21 miles long by 14 miles wide, Barbados has a surprising diversity of scenery. Just a few miles takes you from the tranquillity of the Caribbean west coast, with its luxury hotels and palm fringed beaches, to the dramatic cliffs and wild Atlantic rollers of the eastern coast. The interior has its own beauty as well. Green and lush, the spine of the island rises to more than 1,000 ft at Mount Hillaby while the rolling hills of the northern tip earned it the name, Scotland, from early settlers. On the south coast you'll find the capital Bridgetown, the Airport and most of the vibrant nightlife.
There have been lots of developments recently, with more in the pipeline, which will push Barbados to the forefront as an international golfing destination. Royal Westmoreland is a first class 18 hole course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. The course is a superb 6870 yard par 72 course of unrivalled beauty. Perhaps one of the world's most renowned hotel golf courses is Sandy Lane Golf Club. This is undergoing a transformation by the legendary Tom Fazio. The old course, with its first tee no more than a few hundred metres from the beach, is now a fantastic 9 holer with the other old nine forming part of the new 18 hole Country Club course. If the Country Club course is a bright light then its sister course will be a beacon. Fazio, known as designer of the spectacular, is currently constructing 'The Green Monkey' which is destined to be one of the world's greats. Another shining light is the Barbados Golf Club which officially opened its doors to the public with the clubhouse and all facilities on 2nd August 2000. Located near the airport on the south coast of the island this 6,085-yard par 72 course is already the venue for the Barbados Open and a European PGA venue.
