Area Description

Whales appear to like the Garden Route area every bit as much as we do. They come to mate and calve in the many unspoiled bays of the region’s beautiful coastline. We can’t think of a better place to do it.

The area stretches from Heidelberg to the Tsitsikamma Forest and the Storms River in the east and is graced with beautiful beaches, lakes, rivers and forests. If, like us, you appreciate the beauties of nature, this place will leave you speechless with admiration. Just getting there is a wonderful experience as you reach it via breathtaking passes and gorges through towering ,ountains.

It’s the sunniest part of the Cape and has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild to chilly winters. However, it also has high rainfall figures, mostly during the winter months, and this helps make its golf courses green and lush.

We love to visit George, the capital of the Garden Route, which is nestled below the Outeniqua Mountains and is a major business centre for the Southern Cape region. We never fail to take a trip on one of its main attractions, the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe vintage steam train which travels every day between George and Knysna.

Knysna itself is a picturesque town on the banks of the Knysna Lagoon. It’s one of the Southern Cape’s best-known holiday destinations and is famous for its heads - two great sandstone cliffs that guard the
mouth of the lagoon connecting the estuary with the sea. We can tell you from experience that they’re very impressive. Knysna is well worth a visit and the extensive redevelopment of its waterfront has created a thriving tourist area with bars, restaurants and speciality shops.
