Oitavos Golf Club
One of the finest courses in the region. Renowned American designer Arthur Hills has created an exciting mixture of links and parkland holes while retaining the area's natural beauty. Oitavos has a traditional 'out and back' layout, but that's the only ordinary thing about it. The amazing glass-fronted clubhouse is almost as spectacular as the scenery, with every hole offering views of the Atlantic. The par 3 9th, played towards Europe's westernmost point, is dramatic and the two closing holes are wonderful. Oitavos is an excellent test of golf in lovely surroundings - rated 33 in Europe by Golf World and definitely one for the 'must play' list.

Estoril Golf Club
The second oldest course in the area, Estoril G.C. has a prestigious reputation, as well as an extremely comfortable clubhouse. The atmosphere is so relaxed that you feel as if you should be wearing slippers! The club was a favourite of the Duke of Windsor and it's easy to imagine him out on the course, which has a distinctly British feel. Set in an old pine forest with gentle, tight fairways, small greens and a collection of visually stunning but tricky par 3s, it's a course that will suit the clever shot-maker rather than the big hitter.

Penha Longa Atlantic
Rated No. 31 in Continental Europe by Golf World magazine and host to two Portuguese Opens, Penha Longa Atlantic is an absolute must to play. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, this magnificent championship course is situated in beautiful countryside in the foothills of the Sintra Mountains and has been hewn out of rocky terrain to create a natural feel. The closing three holes are among the best in all of Europe, and the view from the elevated 18th tee is truly spectacular. Also on-site is the delightful 9-hole Monastery course.

Quinta da Beloura
We'll be honest - Quinta da Beloura isn't one of the best or most challenging courses in the area, but it is a lot of fun to play. It runs in a huge circle around a housing estate and some industrial buildings, and although the setting won't win any prizes, the course itself is a delightful doddle, with 6 man-made lakes and plenty of streams to negotiate. What's more, the golf director, Paul Saunders, is an old friend and promises a warm welcome to all Longshot customers.

Belas
Opened in 1998, Belas (pronounced Bel-ash) is already recognised as one of the best courses in the Lisbon area. It's also one of the most difficult - a score of 10 over par here would equate to about 4 over on most other courses. The 1st hole won't exactly set your pulse racing, but just wait till you see the par 5 2nd, which has been compared with the 13th at Augusta. Pinpoint accuracy is required all the way round, but especially on the last two holes, where you must hit over water to reach the green. Buggies recommended.

Quinta da Marinha
A course that has improved tremendously over the last few years, hosting the Estoril Open in 2002. Its five par 5s and six par 3s, as well as its mixture of woodland and links holes, make it different from any other course in the area. Several holes offer wonderful views of the Atlantic coast, particularly the 13th, where you play to a tiny green, and the par 3 14th, which requires you to muster all your courage for a shot across a deep rocky ravine. Don't look down! The course is flat, easy to walk and enjoyable whatever your ability. Guests at the lovely Quinta da Marinha hotel benefit from reduced green fees and some fantastic free golf offers.

Lisbon Sports Club
If you're looking for a course that won't take too long to complete, Lisbon Sports Club could be right up your street. At only 5800 yards, it provides a short but interesting challenge. The course is usually remembered for its notorious 7th hole, which rises steeply before turning left to leave a tricky approach to an elevated green. Not a 'must play', but certainly different from any other course in the area and well worth a visit.

Ribagolfe I & II
Situated in a cork forest 40 minutes south of Lisbon, these two new courses are the most recent addition to the area's golfing portfolio. Ribagolfe I is a challenging championship course, while Ribagolfe II is a less demanding club design. Both have a distinct Valderrama feel and take full advantage of the gently undulating landscape and lovely natural surroundings. A little farther away than most of the area's other courses, but definitely worth the trip.
Ribagolfe I: Par 72; 7100 yards
Ribagolfe II: Par 72; 6830 yards

Campo Real
Designed by Donald Steel, this intriguing new layout provides an exciting alternative to the area's existing courses. The retention of natural features combined with stunning elevation changes and backdrops of verdant hills make Campo Real the perfect golfing escape. Due to open spring 2005 - rates on application.

Praia d'el Rey
Rated as the 13th best course in Continental Europe by Golf World magazine, Praia d'el Rey is nothing short of magnificent. This challenging championship course provides a wonderful test, especially if you enjoy links golf. It's a course of contrasts, with the front nine running through parkland before opening up along the cliff top to give some truly breathtaking sea views. If you're not staying near Praia d'el Rey, don't let the drive put you off - this is perhaps Portugal's best course and, from as little as £17 per round, is great value too. Why not stay at the Marriott Praia d'el Rey and play here for free?

Aroeira I
40 minutes from the village of Sesimbra is the Costa Azul's best-known golf complex, Aroeira. Aroeira I has hosted both the Men's and Ladies' Portuguese Opens and, thanks to its dense forest setting, is commonly referred to as 'the Portuguese Wentworth'. The design skilfully blends the needs of a championship golf course with the natural landscape, featuring several lakes rich in bird life. This is one of the best courses in Portugal and a definite 'must play'.

Aroeira II
40 minutes from the village of Sesimbra is the Costa Azul's best-known golf complex, Aroeira. Different from Aroeira I but of equal quality, the newer Aroeira II provides a really enjoyable challenge. The course has very fast greens, five large lakes and, unlike its neighbour, plenty of fairway bunkers, many of which are devilish pot bunkers that wouldn't look out of place at St Andrews. A truly memorable course.

Troia
Rated No. 25 in Europe by Golf World magazine and host to the 2002 European Amateur Championship, Troia is a magnificent links course and an absolute 'must play'. We think this Trent Jones classic is the most testing course in Portugal - when Sam Torrance won the Portuguese Open here in 1983, he was the only man under par. Sand is the major obstacle - it's everywhere, not only in the bunkers that protect the postage stamp greens, but also in many of the rough areas. Troia is set in a fantastic position on an isolated peninsula and is reached by car ferry.

Montado
Following years in the wilderness, Montado has increased in popularity thanks to considerable investment and design changes that have dramatically improved the course. It has a flat, natural setting and smallish greens that are protected by some cunningly placed bunkers. What really makes the course interesting is that most holes can be played in more than way - will you go for the risky option or play it safe? Not one of our favourites, but it's friendly, quiet and very affordable.

Quinta do Peru
The fantastic Quinta do Peru is a big favourite of ours. It's set among pine and cork trees in a beautiful country estate, is dotted with a vast range of wild flowers and offers stunning mountain views. It has been voted No. 61 in Continental Europe by Golf World magazine and can be enjoyed by high and low handicappers alike. Highlights include the short 8th and the par 3 16th, where your tee shot must clear a large lake. We also love the friendly atmosphere - and the hearty Sunday lunches - in the clubhouse.

Quinta do Brincal (Golden Eagle) Quinta do Brincal is under new ownership and has really benefited from recent investment. Located close to Praia d'el Rey in a unique natural woodland setting, with trees coming right to the edges of the fairways, this long championship course provides a real test of accuracy. There's something of an American feel here, and target golf skills are required to avoid the water hazards and enormous bunkers. Well worth a visit if you're staying in the area.
