Mauritius Courses
The Legend Course
The Belle Mare Plage Championship Golf Course opened in 1994 and was the
first on the island of Mauritius. It was designed by the South African champion,
Hugh Baiocchi, and we found it to be a demanding course, with each of the
18 holes offering a different challenge. The fairways are lined with trees
and bushes, so you need to watch your accuracy, and the greens are set amongst
some
spectacular backdrops. The par 3 17th is the most outstanding hole, with
spectacular views from the tee across the sparkling waters of the bay that
surround the island green, perched on an outcrop of volcanic rock.
The Links Course
This new course opened in November 2002 and has proved to be a welcome addition
to the Belle Mare Plage resort. The course sits beneath the clubhouse and
faces the setting sun, so the early evening views are wonderful. It’s
a par 71 and there’s a practice fairway where you can warm up your
swing. The first
hole eases you gently into the course and the panoramic views are stunning,
but don’t let this easy start fool you - it gets a lot tougher! The
12th is one of the toughest holes, with an uphill fairway and water on the
right. The green is guarded by a large tree, so accuracy is needed. At the
18th you have to clear water to reach the green, which is next to an old
lime kiln. This par four then takes you into the 19th for a well-deserved
drink!
Golf du Chateau
Attached to the Heritage Golf and Spa resort this magnificent 18 hole course is the masterpiece of archeteict Peter Matkovich and is situated between the mountains and the sea in an undulating landscape interspersed with lakes, streams and tropical trees. The course is both technically challenging and varied, providing golfers with a real challenge and some exceptional memories.
