A golf holiday in the Western Algarve, combines the traditional with the modern. The charming towns of Alvor and Lagos are worth a visit, and Portimao, an old seaport, has great shopping along the Rua do Comercio. The tourist hotspot of Albufeira, with great beaches and a buzzing nightlife, include some of Portugal's most popular visitor destinations.

Hotels such as Pestana Carlton offer free golf on the renowned Pinta and Gramacho courses for much of the year. Pinta, a top option for golf in Portugal, is one of the best courses in the region, and was designed retaining natural valleys and undulations. Gramacho is nearly as good as its neighbour. Also try the new Morgado course, one of the best kept Algarve golf secrets, with its picturesque views of the Monchique mountains and the coast.

There are fewer courses in the eastern Algarve, however, this area is still an excellent choice for a golf holiday. One of the Algarve's oldest cities, located at the mouth of the River Gilao, Tavira is a fishing port dating from Moorish times. Nearby is one of Portugal's most important nature reserves, the 70,000 ha Reserva do Sapal, one of the few parts of the Algarve where the natural environment has been preserved and the cultural and historical heritage is much in evidence.

Those looking for quieter golf holidays in the Algarve, with an emphasis on nature, might consider the Eastern part of the coast. Here, the courses have been well planned, have spectacular surroundings and are located near a range of good hotels, only a short distance from the airport.

Just across the border in Spain is the Costa de la Luz. With some great golf courses and cheaper green fees this is an excellent alternative to an Algarve golf break.
